Map
of the Caribbean
| The
islands of the Caribbean form a 2,000-mile arc from the tip of Mexico
to the mouth of the Orinoco. They range in size from a few square
miles to over 350,000, some are the tips of submerged mountain ranges,
others are low-lying coral islands. Some have been independent for
150 years or more, others are still dependencies. Their populations
range from a few hundred to several million; some speak English, some
Spanish, some Dutch or French. Each country has its own distinctive
character. But they all share a glorious climate with plenty of sunshine
(3,000 hours a year in Barbados, for example). They all have the dazzling
beaches and warm blue waters for which the Caribbean is famous. They
all have fine hotels, activities and entertainment, tours and adventures. |

Caribbean
History
Indians
were the first inhabitants here, and then, in 1492, Christopher
Columbus began his exploration of these islands, becoming the first
European to venture into the area. After landing in the Bahamas,
Columbus named these islands the Indies, because he thought he had
finally reached Asia (and the East Indies). Numerous explorers followed
in his path, then settlers arrived from the Americas and Europe.
Included in that mix were religious outcasts, slaves from Africa,
and a small army of infamous pirates. Great military powers would
fight for control of the islands, and finally, a blended mix of
African and European cultures and languages transformed this large
group of islands and its peoples into one of the premier tourist
destinations on the planet. Long called the West Indies, the overall
area is now commonly referred to as the Caribbean, a name that became
popular after World War II.
More
History on the People of Caribbean Islands
They
are mostly descended from the Africans who were forcibly transported
to the "new world" by slave traders over nearly three
centuries;but some are descended from Indian, Chinese and Mediterranean
workers, from Middle Eastern businessmen, or from the earliest Amerindian
settlers (cousins of the 'native Americans' of the US)
